Proposed Uses of St. John's Wort |

- Depression: St. John's wort is considered by the German psychiatric community to be as beneficial as prescription drugs in the treatment of depression. The supplement can ease symptoms of depression such as insomnia, some forms of angina, mood swings, fatigue, and tremors. It is also believed to be effective in treating seasonal affective disorder and several forms of sleeping disorders.
- PMS Menopausal Symptoms: One of the greatest uses for St. John's wort has been in the treatment of premenstrual syndrome and menopausal symptoms. There has been little scientific evidence in this area but women around the world have come to depend on this herb to help them through these stressful transitions.
- Viral diseases: Because of its antiviral properties, St. John's wort is being tested for use in treating herpes simplex, HIV/AIDS and the Epstein-Barr virus (the virus that causes mononucleosis). Test tube studies are promising but much more research is needed, especially in light of the recent drug interaction warning released by the National Institute of Health.
- Wounds: There is little doubt of the uses for this herb in treating wounds. Burns, insect bites, cuts and punctures have all been treated with St. John's wort for centuries. Ointment preparations made with St. John's wort can also relieve the burning and itching of hemorrhoids. Internally, preparations containing St. John's wort can be used to treat Peptic ulcers and other gastrointestinal ailments.
- Other conditions: Acylphloroglucinols: hyperforin with small quantities of adhhyperforin.
